pinewood derby with Mom only

I know it's not pretty, but I must gloat.

In previous years, I have expected/hoped that the Pinewood Derby experience would be Dad/son. It has always been kind of slapdash and last minute, and the results have been 3rd/4th place (out of 4) in the typical heat.

This year, it was all me/son. Dad had a chance, the kit was there for a week and returned here unopened. So, we did it. Son designed, cut with help of nice next-door neighbor with wood shop, painted and decal'd by son. Mom de-burred the axles and put wheels/axles in.

Time trials last Saturday. We did 25 heats (he kept wanting to do more!). ~70% of heats were 1st place, ~25% were second place, 1 was 3rd.

I was good. I did NOT point out previous years' results and compare with this year. I don't think I had to. Son wanted to call Dad and tell him about the time trials. Of course, Dad did not have his phone "on", and returned the excited calls many hours later. (Next day, he returned an urgent call from the other son, promised to call to talk with older son later, did not.)

Actually, I can identify with this one AL.
My dad died when I was about nine, (before we moved here) and at one point my mom was one of my cub scout troup leaders. Anywho, my uncle helped me build a pinewood derby car, (that I think I still have) but I know I have the first place trophy we won. Car's not real fancy, but it won. Pinewood Derby Day!

He got in the finals! He had never gone to the finals before, so that was big. Although he was not the overall winner, this was a huge improvement over previous years.

A kid in his den almost always takes first place. His Dad is a design engineer for Ford, amazing coincidence that. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Oh, and KP brought his affair partner to the Pinewood Derby. (He had the kids this weekend.) I saw her in the entrance hallway and told her that I couldn't believe that MY HUSBAND brought his AFFAIR PARTNER to this family function. She wittily riposted that she was NOT his affair partner, and I was too emotional to come up with anything better, than "are too". Then I went off and was talking with one of the Den Leaders, and she came up and said that she was part of Sam's family now, and I apologized to the Den Leader that my husband had brought a woman of no morals where all these young children were, and she (again with the sharp wit) told me to "Shut Up".

I spent most of the evening sitting with other parents from our den and some of the other parents that I am friendly with, and most of the leaders. Nobody spoke with them - I don't think that KP knows very many of the parents/leaders, and of course she didn't know any. They were all horrified that he would bring her there. David spent most of the evening looking sad, later he went up to the railing on the side of the bleachers that he was on, I waved, he blew kisses because he was not allowed to come over and be with me. (KP was punishing me for speaking harshly to his affair partner by not allowing our son to come and give his mom a hug. Nice parenting tactic, eh?)
